Harvard Video: 3 master students at Harvard talked to people in the education field what it is to be an educator and what do they think is a good educator. I support and agree with their responses. The general gist of what they were saying is that the classroom should be positive, the teachers should develop a positive and ever growing relationship with the students in which they students feel comfortable with the teacher as well as the environment. This environment will then aid the students in learning efficiently and positively. The following are my notes on the video in bullet-point form:
-best classrooms are noisy
-teacher moving back and forth, never hovering in one spot
-students asking questions to the teacher AND each other
-role of the teacher is everything
-what’s the best way to explain this idea to this audience and how do I move them along
-creating a comfortable climate for the students
-interested in what the students have to say
-build your teaching around the student
-establish a personal relationship with your students
-take their students seriously
-help the deal with things that occur both in and out of the classroom
-help the students make mistakes to help them grow and learn from them (teacher looks for mistakes for the students to make, provoking the mistake)
-through studying your craft, you can learn to become better or more effective at teaching
-understand that not all of the students learn the same
-‘roll’ with the students, understand what they are trying to say, if a student is looking at an idea differently, find out why?
-help students to learn on their own
Whiplash:
Mr. Fletcher is a band director whose sole purpose and thought is to have the best ensemble out there. His method of teaching works, if what you define by ‘working’ is a method where the desired end result is achieved, then his method works. However, Mr. Fletcher is demonstrating all the of the characteristics of a ‘bad’ teacher that were revised in the Harvard short film on educators. Did the ensemble get better? Yes. Were they in a positive and comfortable learning environment? No. In my opinion, the only thing that the students learned was how to deal with the absolute worst in life because they suffered through his ‘teaching’.
I chose these clips because I believe that they show both good and bad teaching. I think both of the clips should be shown to educators because through watching them, they can learn what is expected of them as educators. The Harvard clip is a perfect example of what is expected from them as well as being reliable because it comes from other educators as well as having the feedback of students.
